Beat Föllmi studied musicology and protestant theology at Zurich university. His bachelor thesis about The Aftermath of Augustine’s Thinking about Music in 16th century was published in 1994. He received his doctorate degree with a study about Tradition as a hermeneutical category in Arnold Schönberg (published in 1996). From 1997 to 2000 he was stipendiary of the Canton of Zurich for preparing in Strasbourg his habilitation treatise. He obtained his HDR (Habilitation à diriger des recherches) in 2003 at Marc-Bloch University of Strasbourg. He became Maître de conférences at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of Strasbourg in 2008. At the same faculty, he was appointed university professor in 2012. He has the sole chair of Sacred Music and Hymnology in France. Within an exchange program of Strasbourg University, he was invited professor at Laval University in Quebec in 2016.
